Rehashed Run No: 1813; Hare: James Kuah; Date: 29th September, 2009; Venue: Padang Temu.

An Unexpected Tricky Run

Padang Temu is a familiar hashing run site a short distance away south of Malacca city. Its run sites and runs are always placed and confined to the coastal section on the right of the Ujong Pasir – Kandang Road. However, it was of exception during the last week’s run. Its run site was placed at Taman Pertam Jaya new housing estate on the left of the said road and its run crisscrossed it to the coastal section.

It was a cool afternoon. As usual, as oldies who were looking forward for a good sweat-out, my partner and I arrived at the new run site early after spending some time to locate it. Not surprisingly, only one guest runner Ikan was seen there. Very soon, we were joined by Kiasu Lee and Helen of Troy. Without further delay, the 4 of us started our run as early birds at 5.30 pm.

The paper led north and west across the said busy Ujong Pasir – Kandang Road to the coastal section on tarred road where a number of anglers were fishing at the seaside. They were curious to see us in colourful hashing dresses walking for nothing. Whilst there, we met Cocker who was driving and searching the run site of which we gave him the guide. The paper then turned south along the open coast for a short distance before turning left eastward along the Duyong River and across a wooden bridge towards a kampong house on the left after some 45 minutes before hitting the first simple false trail. A spread-out search led Kiasu Lee finding its connecting paper some 100 metres away along the said river on the left of the back trail. As usual, as early birds, we did not join the paper.

The paper continued to lead eastward along the said river where a number of fishermen were unloading their catch from the boats for another some 15 minutes before hitting the second and last simple false trail across a bridge along the Ujong Pasir - Kandang Road. It was then that we were being caught up by scheduled FRB Govind, 4896, Super 96 and Ku Kah. Another spread-out search led to the finding of its connecting paper across the said road a short distance away on the back trail.

From then on, it was another some one-hour walk eastward across a village, northward along the busy AMJ Highway, westward across another village where the SPCA is situated and across a muddy paddy field before arriving back at the run site where a pack of some 20 runners and non runners who included the hare James, co-hare Sharp Shooter Robert Choe, On Sec. Chickadee, On Cash Holick, John Marshall, Mary Josephine, Janet, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan, Pramjit Singh and Edarjit Kaur were enjoying their drinks.

It was a tricky run of some 7 km on flat terrains along the seacoast and river, across a few the villages, three busy motorways and a muddy paddy field. The last runners were back at around 8.00 pm when then sky were dark. They were late starters Vibrator, Cocker and Dr. Linkun.

On On was held at the Hiking Restaurant in downtown Melaka Raya. It was attended by some 40 hashers. Delicious Chinese dinner was served and on-downed session was held for the sinners who included the hare and co-hare. The dinner was partly subsidized by the hare. Thanks.

See you at the coming run of Simon Cheong at Gapam

On! On!
