17th Interhash 2010 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

THE 17TH INTERHASH 2010 IN KUCHING, SARAWAK, MALAYSIA

Hashing is a well-known wonderful pastime with neither political nor racial barrier. Since its inception in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1938, it has spread like wild fire worldwide with the present existence of some 2,000 chapters. For the purpose of socializing, fostering friendship and sharing fun, the first Interhash was organized and held in Hong Kong in 1978. Since then, it was held once in 2 years in various countries on vote the last of which was in Perth, Australia in March, 2008.

Come last week, as voted in the last 16th Interhash, it was its 17th Interterhash which was held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia from 2nd to 4th July, 2010 organized by Hornbill Hash House. As expected, it had attracted a huge participation of some 5,000 ardent hashers from some 60 countries worldwide.

Kuching or Cat City is a cosmopolitan city in the State of Sarawak in East Malaysia with friendly people, fine weather, great run-sites, good food and drinks. It is the home of Kuching Hash House Harriers which is the third oldest hashing chapter in the world born in 1963 after the Mother Hash in1938 and Singapore Hash in 1962. Coincidentally, it is the place where I first started my hashing in 1972 after being introduced by Clive Curnow, an expatriate engineer with the Public Works Department, Sarawak, during my tour of duty there as a police officer with the Royal Malaysian Police from Kuala Lumpur. Since then, there is no looking back for me. I have so far attended a total of 10 Interhashes and hashed in most of the 6 continents in the world except Africa and South America which I am looking forward. Presently, I am a full-time hasher running with the Malacca Hash House Harriers (MH3) which is the oldest of the 9 hashing chapters in the State of Malacca born in 1975.

As arranged by Bombastic, my partner Wonder Woman and I had left Malacca by a chartered bus for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in the early hours of 1st July, 2010 together with 12 other MH3 members namely, Chickadee, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan, SYT, Hawaii Goh, Baby Elephant, Crystal, LEC, Utom Singh, Wewe, Kuan Yin Ma and Bombastic. Whilst there, we met a few other hashers who were also heading to Kuching. The flight took us some 1½ hours to arrive at the Kuching International Airport at 5.45 a.m. where we were being received by its organizing committee member and transported downtown to our Supreme Hotel which is some 12 km away. After checking in, we adjourned to the nearby registration centre at Civic Centre which was crowded with anxious hashers where we confirmed our registrations. Each of us was given a beautiful goodies bag full of 2 colourful T-shirts, a towel, a wrist tag, a beer mug, a magazine, a world hash directory and a nomination card of coming 18th Interhash 2012. After that, it was a free day for us, as we did not register and take part in the Red Dress Run which started at 4.00 p.m. at the Central Padang opposite the Merdeka Palace Hotel.

The main event of GM’s Meeting started at 10.00 a.m. on 2nd July, 2010 at the nearby Sarawak Club Kuching which I attended with Garfield of Malacca Hash and some other 100 hashers. Among the matters presented and discussed were briefing by the organizing committee of Hornbill Hash House which is the host of Interhash 2010 and presentations by bidders of other hashing events. It ended at 11.30 a.m.

The Opening Dinner started at 7.30 p.m. on the same day. It was held at the main venue in an open park behind the Civic Centre where a number of stalls were opened to serve delicious local food and free-flowing Anchor beer, to sell hashing souvenirs and to promote hashing events. Among them were Borobudur Hash of Indonesia and Kenya Hash of Africa which were promoting their Interhash 2012 bids, Hainan Hash of China which was promoting its Interhash 2014 bid (www.hainaninterhash2014.com) and Malacca Hash which was promoting the registration of its 1st World Heritage Run in 2011 (www.worldheritagehash.weebly.com). It was there that I met a number of familiar hashers. Among them were Brigadier General (Retired) Dato’ Soon Lian Cheng of Kuala Lumpur Hash, Murugan of Malaysian Hash Council, Gorilla of Ipoh Hash, Antique Lim, Kachang Panjang, Pecker, Pinky Tights, Rasputin, Laughing Buddha and James Bond of Malacca Hash, Patrick of Muar Hash, Poedi Widya Karsa Halim of Malang Hash, Doraemon and Pilemon of Padang Hash, Indonesia and Stephen Kueh of Kuching Hash who is a devoted veteran hasher who started hashing in 1966 whom I have known since 1972 when I first joined the Kuching Hash. Greetings were exchanged and cock-and-bull stories were told. It was followed by the official opening ceremony of the event by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Malaysia at 8.30 p.m. with fire works, cultural dance and shows and announcement that Stephen Kueh is one of the 4 existing hashers worldwide who had attended all the 17 Interhashes. Congratulations and keep it up! I do not know what time the party ended as I left the venue early at 9.30 p.m.

The main running event of the day started on at 10.00 a.m. on 3rd July, 2010 at Kpg. Sitaang with its Ball Breaker Run of 22 km. It was followed by 5 Long Runs at Kpg. Kuap, Kpg. Menjau, Kpg. Simboh, Kpg. Pesa and Kpg. Apar; 6 Medium Runs at Kpg. Kuap, Kpg. Menjau, Kpg. Simboh, Kpg. Pesa, Kpg. Apar and Kpg. Bawang; 6 Short Runs at Kpg. Kuap, Kpg. Menjau, Kpg. Pesa, Kpg. Apar and Kpg. Bawang; l Cave Run at Kpg. Semerdang; and 1 Old Farts’ Run at Venue Vicinity. The runs started from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. However, as oldies, my partner and I only took part in the Short Run at Kpg. Apar together with 2 busloads of some 80 hashers who included Hawaii Goh and SYT. The run-site was by the side of a road in the district of Bau which is some 30 km north of Kuching city. It was an A to B Run. The run started at 2.50 p.m. after a short and sweet briefing by its hare on the colour of paper to follow, as the trail consisted of a medium and a short runs which were marked by blue and white papers respectively.

It was a fine, cloudy and cool Saturday afternoon. The blue and white papers led south side-by-side on a bushy path into a shady secondary jungle full of wild bamboo, palm and fruit trees. They meandered on the undulating and hilly terrains for some 25 minutes before hitting a signboard at a T-junction which separated the medium run on the left with blue paper and the short run on the right with white paper. Most of the runners took the short run by following the white paper on the right which continued to meander left, right and centre across a few drains and a stretch of swamp through the undulating and hilly terrains of the secondary jungle for another some 30 minutes before exiting at a tarred road. It then turned right northward on the tarred road through a village and turned left eastward at another T-junction for another some 15 minutes before arriving at the ending B run-site at 4.00 p.m. where a big pack of front runners of medium and short runs were enjoying their drinks, watermelon and light food while some were cleaning their muddy legs and shoes in the toilet. Whilst there, we met James Bond, Gorilla, Doraemon and Pilemon.

It was quite a challenging A to B run through the bushy, undulating, hilly and swampy terrains of some 4.7 km which took my partner and I 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete. The last runners were back some 20 minutes later. It was followed by a hash circle which saw a number of sinners being on-downed. It ended at 5.25 p.m. after which we left for the main venue at the downtown Civic Centre which was crowded with a huge number of hungry hashers who were filling their stomachs with variety of delicious local food and drinks in buffet style in open air. In attendance on a stage were live music and shows. As we were feeling tired and needed a rest, my partner and I left the venue for our hotel early at 9.00 p.m. by bus provided when it was still lively.

The running programme on the last day of the event on 4th July, 2010 which consisted of long, medium and short runs at the same run-sites began at 1.00 p.m. However, my partner and I did not attend it as we opted to follow our co Malaccan hashers to go for a sight-seeing tour and shopping of local products at the town of Selikin which is situated at the border of Sarawak, Malaysia and Kalimantan, Indonesia some 1 ½ hours drive away from the Kuching city. We only attended its closing ceremony in the evening at the main venue where we had our dinner of local food and drinks and attended the hash acts on stage one of which was performed by the Malacca Hash led by Cocker and James Bond. It was at around 9.00 p.m. that an official announcement was made that Borobudur Hash, Indonesia had succeeded in its bid to host the coming 18th Interhash from 25th to 27th May, 2012 with the early bird registration fee of US 120 dollars or RM 400 up to 31st August, 2010. Congratulations! As you know, Borobudur is a historic city with ancient Buddhist monument, Hindu temple and live volcano situated in Central Java, Indonesia and fine weather, friendly people, great run-sites, good food and drinks which I have hashed before and which I am cock sure you are going to enjoy it fully. So do not hesitate to register for it, fellow hashers! For more information and registration, please login www.ihjava2012.com. See you there! Like the previous night, we did not stay back until the event ended at around mid-night.

Judging from the above, it is undeniable that it was quite a well-organized Interhash with good runs, good food, good drinks and good fun which made us left Kuching with smiling face and fond memories. Credits should be given to its devoted organizing committee for the job well done. Thanks!

On! On!

Rehashed run 1850 - 15/06/10 - 10 km run

Rehashed Run No: 1850; Hare: Mismanagement Committee; Date: 15th June, 2010; Venue: Krubong.

An Enjoyable 10 Km Road Run

Ten Km Road Run is an annual event of Malacca Hash House Harriers. It is normally set on the road without checks and false trails. Its main object is to test the fitness of hashers who are always being misconstrued as beer drinkers with running problem.

Come yesterday it was its 10 km road run for the year 2010 at Krubong which is some 15 km north-east of Malacca city. As expected, it had attracted a big turnout of some 40 hashers who included 2 guests.

It was a cool and sunny Tuesday afternoon. Looking forward for a good sweat-out, my partner and I arrived at the run-site which is situated at the IOI Oil Palm Plantation at 5.30 pm. Several earlier birds were seen there. They included Dr. Pandyarajah, Sharp Shooter Robert, Water Liu-Liu, Soh, Gobal and his partner. As time passed by, more hashers trickled in. Among them were Albert, Horlicks, Kiasu Lee, Dr. Linkun, Chickadee, ICI Chee, Simon Cheong, Rubbish Bui, Bombastic, Orang Kaya Ngoh, Sweetie Pie, Khoo Ka, Tikus, Camel Lok, Nanda, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, Peter Loi, Govind, Pramjit Singh, Edarjit Kaur, Utom Singh, Amba, Ranger, Tongkat Ali, Gary, Speedy Gonzales, Shintaro, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan and Baby Elephant. While preparing ourselves for the impending run to start, we saw the sudden emergence of Kacang Panjang, 4896 and Super 96 who had just completed laying the paper trail of 10 km which took them 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete with a recce by car the previous day.

It was at 6.02 pm that the run was flagged off by JM Killer Tony. Participated by some 30 hashers, the run was led by a pack of avid runners such as Ranger, Dr. Pandyarajah, Gary, Pramjit Singh, Utom Singh, Nanda, Gobal, Khoo Ka, Soh, Amba and Speedy Gonzales. As oldies of 67 years old who has been hashing for 38 years and whose main object was to complete the run without stopping, I just took my own sweet time running leisurely at my own pace.

The run led north on a broad gravel road into an oil palm plantation. It then went upslope a few minutes later and continued to lead northward for another some 5 minutes before turning left westward. It was then that I was overtaken by Khoo Ka, Govind and Gobal and had overtaken Utom Singh and Pramjit Singh and began losing sights of the avid front-runners such as Ranger and Dr. Pandyarajah. It was some 15 minutes later at Km 4 that I overtook my partner who started the run as early bird at 5.48 pm together with Nancy and Sweetie Pie who were the only 3 harriettes who took part and completed the run. While passing by her, she told me that I was the 11th front-runner which spurred me to move on harder.

The run continued to meandered westward and southward and up and down 2 gentle slopes for another some 2 km before I was over-taken by Tikus, Camel Lok and Water Liu-Liu. It was then that I met Hawaii Goh who was running towards me from the front and told me that he had taken a shortcut from the opposite direction. From then on, the run turned left eastward and continued to meander on the broad gravel road through the oil palm and rubber plantations for another 4 km before arriving back at the run site at 7.11 pm where time keeper Kiasu Lee told me that my time of completing the run was 1 hour 9 minutes and 15 seconds which was recorded by On Sec. Chickadee. On the way at Km 8, I overtook Peter Loi. As time passed by, more runners trickled in. Among them were Nanda, Peter Loi, Vibrator, Rubbish Bui, Orang Kaya Ngoh, Pramjit Singh, ICI Chee, Sweetie Pie, Nancy, Tongkat Ali, Wonder Woman, Albert and Dr. Linkun. The last listed runners who completed the run at 7.31 pm when the sky began to fall dark were Tongkat Ali and my partner Wonder Woman.

It was an enjoyable 10 Km Run on well-laid comfortable virgin running trail on broad, gentle and windy gravel road through the shady oil palm and rubber plantations. A big salute to those who have taken part and completed the run!

Appended below is the list of runners who completed the run with their respective recorded positions and times:

Tan Yan Lye a.k.a. Ranger - 52 minutes 39 seconds.
Dr. Pandyarajah - 53 minutes 15 seconds

Tongkat Ali - 1 hour 28 minutes 52 seconds
Wong Ha Hiong a.k.a. Wonder Woman – 1 hour 41 (29 + 12) minutes 5 seconds

In the absence of GM Cocker, a short and sweet hash circle was conducted by Speedy Gonzales. As usual, it saw a number of sinners who included the first runner being put on ice and on-downed.

On On was held at the nearby Soon Fen Restaurant in Cheng. It was well attended with 4 tables fully taken up. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with free-flowing Tiger beer. Another on-downed session for a big number of sinners was conducted jointly by Bombastic and On Sec. Chickadee. The dinner was on the house. It ended at around 10.30 pm when we dispersed with full stomach and fond memory.

See you at my coming joint run with my partner at Air Salak, Bukit Rambai on 22nd June, 2010, fellow hashers!

Rehashed run 1843 - Chee Cheng Seng 27/04/10

Rehashed Run No: 1843; Hare: Chee Cheng Seng a.k.a. ICI Chee; Date: 27th April, 2010; Venue: Kesang Pajak.

An Enjoyable Tricky Run

Chee Cheng Seng is a devoted hasher whom I first met in 1991 when I joined the MH3. In spite of his tight work schedule, he used to attend the weekly run quite regularly. Come last Tuesday, it was his run on rotation. As expected, it had attracted a turnout of some 30 odd hashers in spite of the long distance of its run site at Kesang Pajak from the Malacca city.

It was a cool Tuesday afternoon after a drizzle. On my early arrival at the run site with my partner, only Dr. Pandyarajah and several cars were seen there. The owners of the other cars belonging to the hare, Kachang Panjang and 4896 must have left the run site earlier to accompany the hare to set the running trail.

It was at 5.10 pm that my partner and I, as oldies and slow runners, started the run as early birds by following the paper which led south on a path into a rubber plantation. After some 25 minutes’ trudge, it turned left across a drain into a young oil palm plantation before hitting the first simple check. A spread-out search led to my partner finding its connecting paper some 100 netres away southward. As usual, to avoid sitting on ice later during the hash circle, we did not join the paper as early birds.

The paper continued to proceed forward across another drain into another oil palm for another some 15 minutes before hitting the first tricky false trail at on a path. Another spread-out search was conducted. It was only some 20 minutes later that I found it on a path beside an oil palm tree some 150 metres away on the right westward of the back trail. By then we were being caught up by a few scheduled runners comprising of Kiasu Lee, SYT, Hawaii Goh, Nancy and Camel Lok.

The paper then proceeded forward for some 10 minutes before hitting the second simple check at a T-junction. Its connecting paper was found by my partner a short distance ahead a few minutes later after a spread-out search.

The paper continued to lead forward across a ditch and turned northward for another 15 minutes before hitting the second tricky false trail upslope on a small hill. By then we were joined by a bigger pack of scheduled runners. Among them was our new GM Cocker. Another hectic spread-out search was conducted. Surprisingly, its connecting paper was again found by my partner some 10 minutes later in a bushy path some 150 metres away ahead of the back trail.

From then on, it was another some 30 minutes’ meander across 2 ditches through an oil palm and a rubber plantations before arriving back at the run site at 7.25 pm where the front and non runners were enjoying their drinks. On the way, we were being over taken by Kukah. The last 3 runners led by Horlicks were back some 10 minutes later when the sky began to fall dark. In appreciation of our participation, we were each given a toothpaste squeezer present by the hare.

It was an enjoyable tricky medium run of some 8 km at this new run site covered with comfortable terrains of rubber and oil palm plantations. It took us some 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete.

Hash circle was conducted by the new GM Cocker. Like previously, it saw a number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed.

On On was held at the nearby Wen Huat Restaurant in Batu Berenam. A total of 4 tables were taken up. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with drinks. It was followed by another on-downed session for the sinners. The food was partly subsidized by the hare. Thanks. It ended at around 10.00 pm when we dispersed.

See you at the coming joint run of P.H. Tan and Vivian at Gapam, fellow hashers!

Rehashed run 1842 - 35th AGM - 20/04/10

Rehashed Run No: 1842; Hares: Dennis Parker a.k.a. Dennis the Menace, Carol Parker a.k.a. Carol the Twin Towers; Date: 20th April, 2010; Venue: Gapam.

An Enjoyable Farewell Run

Dennis the Menace and Carol the Twin Towers is a loving couple and devoted hashers who have been members of Malacca Hash House Harriers (MH3) for the past 4 ½ years after the former’s job transfer from Texas, USA to Malacca in late 2005. Since then, they have been attending the weekly run regularly come rain or shine. Owing to their devotion and capability, they have been voted as Grand Master (GM) and Assistant On Secretary (Asst. On Sec.) of MH3 respectively in 2009 for a period of 2 years.

Time flies. As announced by GM Dennis the Menace during the last run, they would be leaving Malacca for Texas, USA for good on 26th April, 2010. For remembrance and in appreciation of our fellowship, they volunteered to be the hares of this run which was held in conjunction with the 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of MH3.

Gapam is one of the popular hashing run sites in Malacca covered with orchard, rubber and oil palm plantations on mild undulating terrain which is some 20 km east of Malacca city. On my early arrival there at the entrance of Orna Golf Resort along the Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road with my partner and Sexy Chan, there were not a single sole to be seen except the hares’ car. Understandably, they must have left the run site early to set an exciting running trail. Very soon we were joined by Dr. Pandyarajah, Kachang Panjang, Cocker, Bombastic, Killer Tony, ICI Chee, Kiasu Lee, 4896, SYT, Baby Elephant, Pramjit Singh, Edarjit Kaur, Utom Singh, Albert, Rubbish Bui, Super 96, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, Camel Lok, Wee Wee, Sleeping Beauty and Horlicks.

It was a cool Tuesday afternoon after an earlier light downpour. Looking forward for a good sweat-out and led by Killer Tony, a small pack of us made up of Sexy Chan, SYT, Nancy, my partner and I started the run as early birds at 5.50 pm by following the paper on the road which led east towards Bemban. A short distance away, it turned left northward on a broad laterite road into an abandoned vegetable farm for some 15 minutes before hitting a complicated check near a farmhouse. A spread-out search was conducted to no avail. It was only some 10 minutes later when we were joined by a pack of scheduled runners made up of, among others, ICI Chee, Camel Lok, Hawaii Goh and Kachang Panjang that we managed to find its connecting paper in a bushy banana plantation a short distance away on the left westward. As usual, “On! On!” were shouted and the papers were joined for the back runners to follow up.

The paper continued to proceed westward for a short distance before entering into a short stretch of bushy and undulating secondary jungle. It then exited into another banana plantation for a short distance before turning left upslope into a rubber plantation for another some 15 minutes before hitting the second check which my partner and I did not follow. Instead, we followed Kachang Panjang by taking a shortcut forward where we hit its connecting paper a short distance away.

The paper then proceeded northward through a bushy banana plantation for some 10 minutes before entering another bushy rubber plantation across a deep drain. As my partner and I were reluctant to cross and follow it, we took another shortcut by turning right eastward in the banana plantation abreast the rubber plantation. We managed to hit its connecting paper some 500 metres ahead where we met a few on-trailed runners exiting from the rubber plantation. From then on, it was another some 20-minutes’ trudge through the bushy banana plantation before hitting the home trail near the first check where we followed the in-trail on the reverse back to the run site arriving at 7.20 pm where the hares and a big pack of front and non runners were enjoying their cold Tiger beer. In appreciation of our participation and for remembrance, each of us was given a beautiful T-shirt by the hares.

It was a short and enjoyable run of some 6 km through the mild terrain participated by some 40 hashers who included a few guests from other hashing chapters. The last runners were back at around 7.30 pm when the sky was still bright. As usual, it was followed by a jovial hash circle which was conducted by GM Dennis the Menace. It saw a big number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed.

As scheduled, the 35th Annual General Meeting was held at the nearby restaurant of Orna Golf Resort. It was chaired by GM Dennis the Menace and attended by some 50 members. It was then that GM Dennis the Menace had officially tendered his resignation and that of Carol the Twin Towers as GM and Asst. On Sec. of MH3 respectively owing to their impending departure for good to Texas, USA on 26th April, 2010. For his replacement, Ex-GM Au Kait a.k.a. Cocker was voted in. What a great loss to MH3 for losing such a devoted, capable and generous couple of GM and Asst. On Sec! Without any choice or power of holding them back, we can only bid them farewell and extend our best wishes to them. As for Cocker, we welcome him back as our new GM with open heart and hope he will lead MH3 to a greater height.

The AGM was followed with a farewell dinner which was held at the same restaurant. A 6-course delicious Chinese food was served with free-flowing beer and live band with hashers taking the floor for dance. A lucky draw and a dressing contest were also held with Hot Pussy being voted as the most well dressed hasher of the night. Another on-downed session was held for the sinners. The dinner was on the house. It ended at around midnight when we dispersed with full stomach, smiling face and fond memory.

See you at the coming run of Chee Cheng Seng at Kesang Pajak, fellow hashers!

Rehashed run 1841 - Speedy Gonzales: 13/04/10

Rehashed Run No: 1841; Hare: Yusso Bahim a.k.a. Speedy Gonzales; Date: 13th April, 2010; Venue: Bertam Ulu.

An Enjoyable Torch Light Run

Speedy Gonzales is a known active and creative hasher who has been running with MH3 since a few years ago. As scheduled on rotation, it was his turn as hare last week. However, instead of setting a normal daylight run which starts at 6.00 pm, he changed it to torchlight run which started at 7.30 pm when the sky was dark which is seldom being practised. As expected, it had attracted a big turnout of some 40 anxious hashers who included a few guests.

Bertam Ulu is one of the favourite hashing run sites covered with green vegetation on moderate terrain in Malacca. On my early arrival at the run site which was situated in front of Taman Sri Bertam housing estate by the side of Air Keroh – Sungai Udang Highway with my partner, there was already a big pack of enthusiastic hashers who were preparing and looking forward for an unusual run. Among them were Horlicks, Carol the Twin Towers, Henry, Kiasu Lee, Kukah, Gobal, Pramjit Singh, Edarjit Kaur, Utom Singh, Rubbish Bui, ICI Chee, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, SYT, 4896, Super 96, Dr. Linkun, Vibrator, Ranger, Joseph Botak, Sleeping Beauty, Sharp Shooter Robert and the hare who had completed setting running trail earlier with his co-hare Kotehbawahkuichi from Japan.

It was a cool and dark Tuesday night. Equipped with various types of torch light and after a small briefing by the hare on the type of paper to follow, the run was started off at 7.30 pm by following the paper which led left eastward on a bushy path abreast the said highway. As it was dark and bushy through the secondary jungle, it offered us no opportunity to run except walking with the use of various types of torchlight. It was only some 30 minutes later that the paper turned right southward after crossing the Bukit Rambai – Bertam Ulu Road. It then meandered through another secondary jungle on bushy path, across a drain and turned right westward across the said Bukit Rambai – Bertam Ulu Road again for another some 15 minutes. From then on, it was another some 40 minutes’ trudge through the long stretch of bushy path beneath the high tension cable, across an oil palm plantation in Ayer Salak, 2 drains and another long stretch of bushy path before arriving back at the run site at 8.55 pm. We were among a pack of last runners who were made up of late starter GM Dennis the Menace, Carol the Twin Towers, On Sec. Chickadee and 2 Mat Salleh guests. On the way, GM Dennis the Menace was seen attending to an exhausted Mat Salleh guest who was lying by the side of a drain.

It was an enjoyable torchlight run of some 5 km which was only being set occasionally. In appreciation of our participation, we were each given a beautiful cowboy hat by the hare.

Hash circle was conducted by GM Dennis the Menace. However, as my partner and I opted to leave for our nearby home for an early shower, we did not attend it. Understandably, a number of sinners would be put on ice and on-downed.

On In was held at the nearby Sin Haw Restaurant in Cheng. It was well attended by some 40 hungry hashers. A delicious Chinese dinner was served with drinks. Another on-downed session was held for the sinners. It was then announced by GM Dennis the Menace that he and Carol the Twin Towers would be leaving us for Texas, USA for good on 26th April, 2010. In appreciation of our fellowship, they would be setting their last joint run for us on 24th April, 2010. So make sure you attend it, fellow hashers! The dinner was on the hare. Thanks. It ended at around 12.00 mid-night.

See you at the coming run of GM Dennis the Menace and Carol the Twin Towers at Gapam, fellow hashers!

Rehashed run 1840 - Sweetie Pie & Orang Kaya - 6/4/10

Rehashed Run No: 1840; Hares: Ngoh Kim Siah (Orang Kaya) & Debbie Lee (Sweetie Pie); Date: 6th April, 2010; Venue: Gapam.

Accompanying The Co-hare To Set An Enjoyable Medium Run

Ngoh Kim Siah and Debbie Lee are two devoted veteran hashers whom I have known since joining the MH3 in 1991. In spite of their busy work, they make it a point to attend the weekly run regularly come rain or shine.

Come last Tuesday which was a sunny day, it was their turn as joint hares on rotation. As expected, owing to their popularity, it had attracted a big turnout of some 50 hashers who included 14 local and foreign guests from Thailand and Japan.

Gapam is a popular hashing run site which is situated some 20 km east of Malacca City. It is covered with fruit, oil palm and rubber plantations on mild bushy and undulating terrains across a few rivers and ditches which is ideal for hashing.

As invited by professional co-hare Killer Tony earlier, my partner and I arrived at the run site beside the Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road at 4.00 pm after picking up Sexy Chan. After putting up the hash signboard and equipping ourselves with a bag of shredded white papers, a knife, a GPS and few bottles of drinking water, and after having a small briefing on the intended running trail, the 4 of us set out to lay the paper at 4.15 pm without recce led by Killer Tony. The paper led southward on a path into an oil palm plantation, abreast a long stretch of deep ditch in an open land and across a drain into another oil palm plantation for some 35 minutes before a simple check was set on a bushy path. Its connecting was placed beside an oil palm tree some 100 metres away on the left of the back trail.

The paper continued to lead southward across an oil palm and a rubber plantation for the next 15 minutes before the second simple check was set on a path. Its connecting paper was placed beside a rubber tree some 100 metres away on the left forward.

The paper then led eastward through an oil palm plantation, a bushy rubber plantation full of mosquitoes and 2 drains for another some 20 minutes before the third simple check was set on a bushy path. Its connecting paper was placed some 100 metres ahead.

The fourth and last simple check was set on another bushy path in an oil palm plantation another some 20 minutes later after crossing through a rubber plantation. Like the previous check, its connecting paper was placed some 100 metres away ahead. By then we were in Tehel. From then on, the paper continued to be set eastward and northward through Kampung Tehel, abreast the long stretch of Tehel River and Duyong River and across Kampung Duyong for another some one hour before arriving back at the run site through Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road at 6.50 pm where a pack of non runners and SCB were enjoying their drinks around the beer wagon.

It was a medium run of 10.21 km as recorded by Killer Tony’s GPS. It took the first avid runner to arrive back at 7.12 pm. And he is none other than energetic Dr. Pandyarajah followed closely by a Japanese guest Kotehbawahkuichi and Ranger. As time passed by, more runners trickled in. They included Vibrator, Albert, ICI Chee, Govind, Wee Wee, GM Dennis the Menace and Carol the Twin Towers who had just returned from their holiday trip to Gulf of Bengal. The last runners who exited at 8.35 pm when the sky was dark were Pecker and Dr. Linkun. Only God knows why they were so slow.

Hash Circle was conducted jointly by GM Dennis the Menace and Ex-GM Vibrator. As usual, it saw a big number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed. They included the hares who did not set the run but only attended it due to their busy work. It was then announced by GM Dennis the Menace that he and his other half Carol the Twin Towers would be leaving Malacca for Texas, USA for good on 1st May, 2010 after 4 years’ hashing with MH3. What a great shock to us! We are definitely going to lose and miss a great couple of ardent, devoted and generous hashers like them. Hope to see them again in the nearest future after that and wish them all the best. In appreciation of our fellowship, each of us was given a cold beer.

On In was held at the popular Jaya Corner Restaurant in the nearby Bukit Beruang. It was well attended with 5 tables fully occupied. A sumptuous Chinese dinner was served with beer, wine and brandy. Another on-downed session was conducted for a number of sinners and a lucky draw was held. The food was on the hares. A big thanks!

It was undoubtedly an enjoyable run and On In. It ended at around 11.00 pm when we dispersed with fond memory.

See you at the coming torchlight run of Speedy Gonzales at Bertam Ulu, fellow hashers!

On! On!

Rehashed run 1839 - Gary & Evelyn 30-03-10

Rehashed Run No: 1839; Hares: Gary Tan & Evelyn Cheong; Date: 30th March, 2010; Venue: Cheng.

A Memorable Tricky And Hilly Run

Gary Tan and Evelyn Cheong is a young and loving couple who have been running with MH3 for a number of years. As scheduled on rotation, it was their turn as joint hares in last week’s run which had attracted a pack of some 30 hashers who included 3 guests.

It was a cloudy and cool Tuesday afternoon. On my late arrival at the run site in a housing estate with my other half, there were already quite a big number of turnouts who were preparing for the impending run.

It was at 5.50 pm that patience got the better of Hawaii Goh, Nancy, SYT, Super 96, my partner and I. Led by Hawaii Goh, we started the run as early birds by following the paper which led uphill beside a big water tank and a stretch of bush for a short distance before arriving at an oil palm plantation. It then meandered down slope for some 15 minutes before hitting first tricky false trail. A spread-out search led to the finding of its connecting paper some 100 metres away uphill on the right of the back trail by Hawaii Goh and his pack some 10 minutes later. By then I was left alone without my partner, as I had just found the said connecting paper after taking a big loop. And it was then that I met scheduled runner Wee Wee who was also walking alone. For the purpose of avoiding getting lost separately, we decided to follow the paper together and engaged in chitchatting.

The paper continued to meander through the oil palm plantation for a short while before exiting at tarred road in a rubber plantation northward. It was another short while later that it hit a T-junction in front of the new Tesco construction site on the left which leads to the home trail a short distance away. However, as it was still early then and as devoted hashers who were determined to complete the whole run, we decided to follow the paper which led to the right on the tarred road. A short distance away, we met a few traffic policemen who were conducting checks on motorcycles and their riders. They smiled at us crazy hashers running after the white paper trail.

The paper continued to lead eastward on the tarred road for another short distance before turning right into an oil palm plantation beside a farmhouse where a pack of dogs were barking at us for intruding into its compound. It encircled a loop for some 10 minutes before returning to the same entrance. It was then that we realized that we were caught in a loop and met Kachang Panjang and Agnes who were also caught in the same loop behind us a short while later. A spread-out search was conducted to no avail. We then followed Kachang Panjang who led us on a path southward under a long stretch of high-tension electric cable. And to our great relief, it was some 400 metres away that we hit the paper trail. As slow walkers, Wee Wee, Agnes and I were left behind by fast walker Kachang Panjang a short while later. From then on, it was another some l-hour trudge up and down 5 tough and steep hills where we showed our hashing spirit by pushing and pulling each other before arriving at Taman Cheng Baru housing estate after exiting from the Chinese cemetery at Krubong with the use of a torch light I carried when the sky was dark. We were then picked up by the hare Gary with a van and arrived back at the run site as last runners at 8.10 pm when the hash circle was on. Needless to say that my partner who had exited earlier with Hawaii Goh, Camel Lok, Nancy and SYT, was smiling widely upon seeing me arriving back safely in one piece. Otherwise she would be having a sleepless night worrying!

It was a memorable medium run of some 7 km with tricky checks and loop through tough and hilly terrains. Luckily the 3 of us were stuck together all the while otherwise we might have got lost and spent the night individually in the plantation. Of course I do not mind getting lost and spending the night there with them even with the risk of my ear being pulled by my partner the next day!

In the absence of GM Dennis the Menace who was away on holiday on an island in the Gulf of Bengal with Carol the Twin Towers, the hash circle was conducted by On Sec. Chickadee. As usual, it saw a big number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed. They included the 3 of us last runners.

On In was held at the nearby Wellen Restaurant in Taman Cheng Perdana. In attendance were some 30 hungry hashers. A delicious 6-course Chinese dinner was served with drinks. Another on-downed session was conducted by On Sec. Chickadee for the sinners who included the hares. The food was on the hares. A big thanks. The pack had started to disperse at 9.45 pm.

See you at the coming joint run of Ngoh Kim Siah and Debbie Lee at Gapam, fellow hashers!
