Rehash of run #1811

Rehash of Run #1811

Hare: Lady Gracie

Venue: Gapam

This run was an especially enjoyable treat for me as I had started the day in an 8 am meeting at Kuala Lumpur which was scheduled for two days with an overnighter. Fortunately, most of the controversial issues had been resolved before the meeting, and I was able to drive back to Melaka and reach the run site by about 6:25. Going in so late I expected to encounter very few hashers and figured I’d be running by myself. Wrong!

The trail started into Gapam via a palm lorry track. As it hadn’t rained, the track was dry and running was easy. Khoo Kah and Marion arrived at about the same time, and we all headed in. At the first bend, Chickadee and Baby Elephant met us, already heading back to handle the attendance list and guard the run site. The trail stayed on track through the rubber and palms for some 3+ km. If there were any checks, they had already been broken, which allowed for a swift pace.

Eventually the trail reached a wide stream, where the path left the lorry track and headed along the stream before veering back into the rubber on a tapper trail. Prior to the turn I met Cocker, Helen of Troy, Bombastic, and some others, all of which were backtracking. It was obvious they didn’t trust the co-hare, (Killer – Crazy Horse) and weren’t taking any chance on the upcoming big loop off the path.

The trail left the stream and passed through some ditches and scrag before re-entering the rubber on another tapper trail. The checks had been joined so it was a nice run back through the rubber estate, though I did pass several tired looking hashers. This lot included Kiasa Lee, Dr. Lingkun, Mother Teresa, and Bugsy Malone; amongst several others.

Back at the run site I was treated to the customary view of Ranger’s backside and opened a cold Tiger.

The circle was short as it was a fairly long run with many late starters. The SCB’s were on-downed along with the co-hare. Next week’s hares – Kiasu Lee and Camel Lok announced the next run to be at the reservoir towards Machap. Directions are to pass through Durian Tunggal, go under the flyover, turn left, proceed past the reservoir, then look for hash signs on the right hand side.

The On In was at New Good World with 4 full tables. It was good to see the Hare, (Gracie) who has been MIA. She is recovering from leg surgery, but was in good spirits. Quite a bit of BS was passed around, details which I will omit under the 5th amendment. All in all, it was a very nice run and dinner, which was enjoyable for everyone.

On On!!!

Rehashed Run No: 1810; Hare: Au Kait a.k.a. Cocker; Date: 8th September, 2009; Venue: Gapam.

Accompanying The Hare To Set His Birthday Run

Time flies. Just a twinkling of an eye, a year has passed since ex-GM Cocker celebrated his last memorable 55th birthday run No.1759 on 9th September, 2008. And it is of no exception this year. Come yesterday, he has celebrated his 56th birthday by setting another memorable run. And as expected, it has attracted a big turnout of some 60 avid hashers who included 18 guests from other hashing chapters. Among them were James Bond, Tikus, Mary Chong and partner Loi, Andy and KY.

It was a fine and cooling Tuesday afternoon. As invited, my partner and I arrived early at the run site which was situated in front of Tiara Golf Club, Gapam where we met Cocker and co-hare Killer Tony after picking up Sexy Chan. Soon after putting up the signboard and equipping ourselves with 2 GPSs, 2 walkie-talkies, stacks of shredded white papers, 3 knives, mobile phones, drinking water and torch lights, we set out to lay the running trail at 3.15 pm led by Cocker and co-hare Killer Tony. The trail led east along the Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road for a short distance before turning left northward and upslope into a banana plantation. After some 10 minutes’ walk, the first simple check was set at a T-junction and the first complicated false trail was set a short distance away on the right. Its connecting paper was placed a short distance away on the left of the first check. Understandably, they were set to catch and slow down the FRB (Front Running Bastard) such as GM Dennis the Menace, Ranger, Dr. Pandyarajah, Speedy Gonzales and Govind to be with the slow runners and oldies like my partner and I. What a good idea!

The trail then continued to lead northward in the banana plantation abreast the outer fencing of Tiara Golf Club for some 20 minutes before the second check was placed at another T-junction at its fringe and its second false trail was placed a short distance away eastward abreast a rubber plantation. Similar to the first check and false trail, its connecting paper was placed a short distance away ahead and northward of the second check in a rubber plantation.

The trail then continued to lead northward in the bushy rubber plantation abreast the outer fencing of the said golf club for some 15 minutes before turning right and zigzagging left right and centre across a couple of ditches for another some 1 hour where another 3 more complicated checks and 2 false trails were set before exiting southward into another banana plantation where the 6th and the last check was set at a T-junction. Its connection paper was placed a short distance away on the right. From then on, it was another some 30 minutes zigzagging through the banana plantation and water-melon farm before arriving at the Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road at 5.45 pm where we took a rest to avoid sitting on ice for appearing at the run site before the run started at 6.00 pm. On the way, we met 4 early birds starting their run from the back trail. They were none other then Garfield, Bombastic, Band Boy and Dr. Linkun. We arrived back at the run site at 6.15 pm when the last runner ex-GM Vibrator started his run.

It was a quite a tricky and challenging run of some 9 km which took the hare ex-GM Cocker and co-hare Killer Tony some 2 ½ hours to set without reccee. It took the first runner Ranger some 1 hour to complete closely followed by Dr. Pandyarajah, guest runner Tay, GM Dennis the Menace, Speedy Gonzales, guest runner KY, 4896 and partner Super 96. As time passed by, more runners trickled in. Among them were Vibrator, Chickadee, Albert, Mary Josephine, Helen, Holy, Capt. Tay, Hawaii Goh and Nancy. The last runner who arrived back at 8.15 pm when the sky was dark was Henry accompanied by kind-hearted avid runner Ku Kah. What a great relief to GM Dennis the Menace, as he could not afford to loose the good service of Henry if he is lost!

A short-and-sweet hash circle attended by a small pack of runners was conducted by the ever-industrious GM Dennis the Menace. It saw a few sinners who included the hare and his co-hare being put on-ice and on-downed. It was then announced that the coming week’s hare would be Gracie with its run site at Ayer Keroh – Bemban Road. See you there, fellow hashers!

On On was held at the downtown Hiking Restaurant in Melaka Raya. It was well attended with 5 tables fully occupied. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with 2 bottles of Tiger beer for each table. To add more fun, songs were sang and on-downed sessions were held for the sinners. In addition, a huge birthday cake was presented to the hare and a few other hashers who were born in the month of September. It ended at around 10.30 pm.

It was a good birthday celebration run with good dinner which was on the hare. Thanks and Happy Birthday, Cocker!

rehashed run no.1809

Rehashed Run No: 1809; Hares: Utom Singh & Sukminderjeet Kaur; Date: 1st September, 2009; Venue: A Fomosa Resort, Alor Gajah.

An Enjoyable Challenging Run

A Fomosa is a well-known golf course cum holiday resort in the District of Alor Gajah which is some 40 km north of Malacca city. In my 19-years’ stay in Malacca, I have only run twice there comprising of one 8-km road run organised by the resort and another hash run a few years ago. It is a challenging run site with undulating hilly terrains of oil palm, fruit and rubber plantations and secondary jungle.

It was a cool and cloudy afternoon after a morning downpour. As announced by its hare Utom Singh during the last week’s hash circle and looking forward for a good run, my partner and I arrived at the run site early. Not surprisingly, only a motorcycle belonging to co-hare Raju and 2 cars belonging to the hare and Dr. Pandyarajah were seen there. Except Dr. Pandyarajah who was idling around, the hare and his co-hare were nowhere to be seen. Understandably, they must have gone in early to set the running trail. A short while later, we were joined by Gilbert Chee, Albert, 4896 and partner Ah Cheng, two youngsters who were said to be the hare’s son and cousin, and the hare, co-hares Pramjit Singh and Raju who exited from the south with sweaty and muddy bodies after laying the paper.

It was at 5.35 pm that the five of us who were made up of the hare’s son and cousin, Ah Cheng, my partner and I started the run as early birds by following the papers which led south into a short stretch of oil palm plantation. It then meandered into an open bush, across a high-tension cable and into a rubber plantation on wide laterite road for some 35 minutes before hitting the first and only complicated check at a slope. A spread-out search was conducted for some 20 minutes to no avail. We were then joined by a pack of scheduled runners who started the run at 6.00 pm. Among them were Dr. Pandyarajah, Chee Chin Seng, Albert, ex- GM Cocker, 4896, GM Dennis the Menace, Govind, Dr. Linkun, Tongkat Ali, Simmon Cheong and Nanda. To our surprise and relief, its connecting paper was found on the right of the back trail some 100 metres away by one of the scheduled runners.

The paper then continued to proceed eastward up and down a small hilly rubber plantation for the next 15 minutes before hitting a false trail which caught the front runners. Another spread-out search led to the finding of its connecting paper by me at a bushy slope a few minutes later a short distance ahead on the back trail. From then on, it was another some 40 minutes tough trudge zigzagging left, right and centre, up and down 2 bushy and slippery muddy hills of rubber plantation and secondary jungle, across several deep drains and ditches which required the assistance of fellow hashers to cross and some 2-km road run before arriving back at the run site as last runners at 7.40 pm when the sky began to fall dark. On the way, after crossing the last deep ditch assisted by the ever-helpful GM Dennis the Menace, we were being caught up by late starter Vibrator.

It was an enjoyable challenging run of some 6 km across the hilly, bushy, muddy and slippery terrains which made us sweating profusely, our backsides covered with mud and our balls shrinking. Well done, hares!

On rare occasion, On On was held at the open run site in buffet style. Delicious vegetable, mutton and prawn curries were served with rice, chapaty and free-flowing beer. It was on the hares.
Hash circle was conducted by the long-lost GM, Dennis the Menace, who was missing for the last 2 runs. It was attended by some 30 hashers. As usual, it saw a number of sinners who included the hare and co-hares being put on-ice and on-downed. It ended in some 30 minutes after which we left for our respective homes-sweet-homes. See you at the coming run of ex-GM Cocker in Bemban next week which is expected to be another enjoyable run, fellow hashers!

On! On!
