Rehashed run 1828 - Nandagoben 12/1/10

Rehashed Run No: 1828; Hare: Nandagoben; Date: 12th January, 2010; Venue: Durian Tunggal.

An Enjoyable Confusing Run

Nandagoben is a senior police officer attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Melaka. An energetic front-runner, he has been running with Malacca Hash House Harriers for the past few years.

As scheduled, yesterday was his turn as hare on rotation for the weekly run at the unfamiliar run site in Durian Tunggal. As expected, it attracted a fairly big turnout of some 40 hashers who included a few guests.

As usual, looking forward for a good sweat-out, my partner and I arrived early at the run site by the side of Auyin Hill - Macap Baru Road. Not surprisingly, only 4 cars belonging to the hare and his co-hares Bombastic and Govind were seen there. Understandably, their owners must have left earlier to set the running trail. Very soon, we were joined by Dirk Limann, another early bird.

It was a fine Tuesday afternoon when the three of us started the run as early birds at 5.15 pm after equipping ourselves with a GPS, a torch light and a bottle of drinking water each. Led by Dirk Limann, we followed the paper which led east along the said road for a short distance before turning left northeastward into a rubber plantation, a short stretch of oil palm plantation, 2 barbed-wire fencings and a deep ditch for some 25 minutes before hitting the first simple check at a T-junction but yet took us oldies some 5 minutes to find its connecting paper some 100 metres away on the right after a spread-out search. It was found by me and as usual, as early birds and to avoid sitting on ice during the hash circle later, we did not join it.

The paper continued to lead northward through the rubber plantation and across a chicken farm for another some 15 minutes before hitting a simple false trail at a path. Another spread-out search led Dirk Limann to finding its connecting paper a short distance ahead a little while later.

The paper continued to lead ahead and meandered through the undulating terrains of rubber plantation, across a village on a tarred road which could lead to the run site a short distance away but turned right instead into another rubber plantation for another some 40 minutes across another deep ditch before we were overtaken by the first energetic scheduled runner Ranger followed closely by Dr. Pandyarajah, a Mat Salleh guest, Speedy Gonzales and Camel Lok at an uphill slope. Not long after that, we were caught up at a complicated check which led to a few connecting papers. By that time, we were joined by a bigger pack of runners who included Gobal Taekwando, Super 96, SYT and Horlicks. It was then that we were separated with SYT, Horlicks, Camel Lok, my partner and I following the paper which went across an oil palm plantation abreast a lake before hitting the in-trail from the said chicken farm back to the run site led jointly by Speedy Gonzales and Gobal Taekwando. The rest followed the different paper trails out. We arrived back at the run site at 7.25 pm when the sky was still bright and where the hare, the co-hares, a big pack of front-runners, SCB and non-runners were enjoying their drinks around the beer wagon. We were then told by the co-hare that we had followed the wrong paper out. The correct exit was from the left of the run site along the Auyin Hill – Macap Baru Road.

It was an enjoyable medium run of some 8 km on confusing trails at this seldom-patronized run site which took the hare and his co-hares some 2 hours plus to set without recce. The last runners were back at around 7.40 pm when hash circle was in progress. They included Kukah and Dr. Linkun.

Hash circle was well attended by some 35 hashers who included a few guests. In the absence of GM Dennis the Menace who was busy at work, it was conducted jointly by ex GM Cocker and Speedy Gonzales. It saw a number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed.

On In was held at the nearby popular Indian restaurant in Batu Berendam. It was well attended by a big pack of some 30 plus hungry hashers who included Carol the Twin Towers, Henry, Kiasu Lee, ICI Chee, Pramjit Singh, Edarjit Kaur, We We, Horlicks and Albert. For a change, a delicious mouth-watering banana leaf dinner was served with nasi beriani, chicken and mutton curries, curry boiled egg, pickle mixed vegetables, iced tea and free-blowing beer. Another on-downed session was conducted by Ex GM Bombastic for a good number of sinners and a birthday cake was cut for hashers who were born in January. The dinner was on the hare. A big thanks. It was at around 10.20 pm that we began to disperse.

See you at the coming run of Ranger at Semabok, fellow hashers!

On! On!

Rehashed run 1827 - Dirk Limann a.k.a. Kaiser

Rehashed Run No: 1827; Hare: Dirk Limann a.k.a. Kaiser; Date: 5th January, 2010; Venue: Bemban.

An Enjoyable Tricky New Year Run

Malacca Hash House Harriers was founded on 13th May, 1975. It is the mother hash of the current 8 hashing chapters in Malacca.

Time passes very fast like lightning. Come yesterday it was its first new year run for 2010 which coincided with its 35th anniversary as well as its hare Dirk Limann who is one of its founders whom I have known since 1991 when I first joined it after my job transfer from Kuala Lumpur. As expected, being a devoted veteran hasher, this new-year run of his had attracted a big turnout of some 64 hashers who included a number of guests from other hashing chapters.

It was a sunny Tuesday afternoon. As usual, longing for a good sweat-out and socializing with other hashers, my partner and I arrived early at the run site by the side of Bemban – Air Panas Road after picking up Sexy Chan. As expected, only Dirk Limann’s car was seen there. Understandably, he must have left earlier to set the running trail. Very soon, we were joined by Kachang Panjang, Dr.Linkun, Gilbert, Albert and Horlicks.

It was at 5.25 pm that patience had taken the better of us as oldies who were looking forward for a good sweat-out. Accompanied by Sexy Chan, my partner and I started the run as early birds by following the paper which led east along the Bemban – Air Panas Road for a short distance before turning south into an oil palm plantation. Some 15 minutes later we were caught by a false trail at the T-junction on a tarred road. A spread-out search of some 5 minutes led Sexy Chan finding its connecting paper a short distance away ahead of the back trail. As early birds, we did not join the paper.

The paper continued to led north on a tarred road through a village, northwest through a bushy rubber plantation abreast the North-South Expressway and meandered southeast into an oil palm plantation for some 20 minutes before hitting its first complicated check at a cross junction.

On the way, we were being caught up by SYT, another early bird. A spread-out search of some 10 minutes led SYT finding its connecting paper on top of a slope a short distance away.

The paper then led left eastward for some 5 minutes when it hit the second simple check at a T-junction which led to the third complicated check some 100 metres ahead. While searching for its connecting paper, we saw a big pack of scheduled runners consisting of among them 4896, Govind, Speedy Gonzales, Ranger, Hawaii, Helen of Troy, Nancy, Camel Lok, Kiasu Lee and Simon running downhill and uphill on our left. Not wanting to follow them through the tough descent and ascent, we took a shortcut to the other side of the hill when we realized that we were caught in a loop. Whilst there, we met Carol the Twin Towers who was alone not accompanied by GM Dennis the Menace. After searching around in circle for a short while without finding its connecting paper, Hawaii, Nancy, Camel Lok, Helen of Troy, SYT, Sexy Chan, my partner and I decided to take the home trail by heading south. A short while later while going down slope, we met on-trail runners 4896, Kiasu Lee and Simon exiting from our right towards the home trail which we followed. From then on, it was another some 20 minutes’ walk through a rubber plantation, an orchard and a village before arriving back at the run site at 7.20 pm where the hare, a big pack of front and non runners were enjoying their drinks. On the way, we were being overtaken by late starter GM Dennis the Menace and met Kukah in the company of a guest Mat Salleh hasher from United Kingdom running from the opposite direction.

It was a tricky medium run of some 7 km which took the hare some1 hour plus to set with several recce. The last runners were back from Bemban town at 8.25 pm when the sky was dark after losing their trail. They were none other than late starter and back-trailers Kukah and the said Mat Salleh guest.

A long and lengthy hash circle was conducted jointly by GM Dennis the Menace and Ex GM Cocker. It was well attended which saw a good number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed. It was then announced that the coming run of Nandagoben would be held at Auyin Hill, Durian Tunggal.

On In was held at the nearby Pao Thoong Restaurant in Bemban which is owned by ex MH3 member Tarzan. It was well attended by some 40 hashers. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with cold Tiger beer. Another on-downed session was held for another good number of sinners. The food was on the hare. It ended at around 10.30 pm. Thanks to the hare for the good new year run and good dinner. Happy New Year!

See you at the coming run, fellow hashers!

Rehashed run1826 - Christmas Run

Rehashed Run No: 1826; Hare/Occasion: Christian Connection/Christmas Run; Date: 29th December, 2009; Venue: Melaka Raya.

A Unique And Memorable Christmas Run

Christmas Run is one of the 4 festival runs celebrated yearly by Malacca Hash House Harriers. The other 3 are Chinese New Year Run, Deepavali Run and Vasaki Run. They used to be celebrated grandly with big turnout.

Come last 29th December it was the Christmas Run for the year 2009. It was held at Melaka Raya which is situated in the heart of Malacca City. As expected, it had attracted a big turnout which included a number of guests from other hashing chapters.

It was a fine Tuesday afternoon. On my early arrival at the virgin run site in front of the newly opened Hash House Hotel with my partner, we met Horlicks and Dirk Limann a.k.a. Kaiser. As oldies who were longing for a good sweat-out, Dirk Limann, my partner and I started the run as early birds at 5.20 pm by following the white chalk marking which led southeast towards Dataran Merdeka which was crowded with tourists. It then went up and down on staircase through St. Paul Hill, southward through A Formosa, Equatorial Hotel and High School for some 20 minutes before hitting the first tricky check at a T-junction. Its connecting white chalk marking was found by Dirk Limann on a narrow road a short distance away at Kampung Banda Kaba village some 5 minutes later after a spread-out search. Understandably we did not join the trail for reasons that we were early birds not equipped with white chalk.

The white chalk marking then led eastward through a housing estate for some 10 minutes before hitting the second tricky check by the side of Jalan Bukit China road. Another spread-out check of some 5 minutes led to my partner finding its connecting white chalk marking on a stone half way up the Bukit China hill some 100 metres ahead.

The white chalk marking continued to proceed uphill for a short distance before hitting a jogging track and led right through the Bukit China Chinese cemetery where we encountered a number of casual joggers. After going through the undulating terrains for some 10 minutes, it led downhill to Jalan Bukit Selindek road where it hit the third and last check at a T-junction.

Another spread-out check led Dirk Limann to finding its connecting white chalk marking a short distance ahead across the road near Helen Of Troy’s house. From then on, it was a road run eastward uphill and downhill across a Christian cemetery, south and eastward across the Bukit Selindek Park, westward across a Teacher Training College and housing estate, uphill and downhill across the northern section of Bukit China Chinese cemetery, and northward along the Jalan Durian Daun road for another some 50 minutes before arriving at Taman Rempah car park, Pengkalan Rama at 7.00 pm where a big pack of SCB and non runners were enjoying their drinks and light food. Among them were Ranger, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, Sexy Chan, Killer Tony, Albert, SYT, Helen Of Troy and a few guests. On the way a few minutes earlier, we were being caught up by scheduled runners 4896, Govind, Speedy Gonzales, ICI Chee, Nanda and Gobalakrishnan. As time passed by, more runners trickled in. They included GM Dennis the Menace. The last runners were back some 30 minutes later when the sky began to fall dark. In appreciation of our participation, each harrier was given a beautiful red T-shirt and harriet a beautiful and sexy red skirt.

It was a medium, city run of some 7 km at this virgin run site. According to GM Dennis the Menace, it was set single handedly by his other half, Carol the Twin Towers who had just returned from her vacation, with a recce a day before accompanied by him. A big salute to them for their good effort.

Hash circle was conducted by GM Dennis the Menace. As usual, it saw a big number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed. It ended at around 8.00 pm after which we took a boat ride in 2 boats along the scenic Malacca River arriving back at the run site 20 minutes later.

On In was held at the pub cum restaurant of Hash House Hotel operated jointly by a couple of devoted veteran hashers which is said to be the only one in Malaysia. Fellow hashers are welcome to patronize it to meet and socialize with one and other. It was well attended by some 60 hashers who included a number of guests. We were entertained with a sumptuous buffet dinner with free-flowing Tiger beer. Another on-downed session was held for the sinners. It was then announced by GM Dennis the Menace that the coming run of volunteer hare Dirk Limann on 5th January, 2010 would be held at Bemban – Air Panas Road, Bemban. It was at around 10.30 pm that my partner and I departed for home as early birds when the party was still on.

It was a unique and enjoyable first Christmas Run in Malacca City by MH3 which I have ever attended. The food and drinks were on the Christmas Connection. A big thanks. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

See you at the coming run of Dirk Limann, fellow hashers!
