Rehashed Run No: 1816; Hare: Marion Chung (Sleeping Beauty); Date: 20th October, 2009; Venue: Taman Bertam Setia, Bertam Ulu.

Accompanying The Hare To Set A Memorable Run

It was another sunny Tuesday afternoon which was the running day of MH3. As arranged a couple of weeks earlier, my partner and I arrived at the popular run site early where we met the hare Sleeping Beauty in the company of Sharp Shooter Robert and co-hare Hawaii Goh. After putting up the direction sign, parking our cars, having a small discussion on its intended running trail and equipping ourselves with shredded white papers, 2 knives and drinking water, we set out to lay the paper without recce at 1.15 pm.

Led by co-hare Hawaii Goh who intended to follow the same running trail which he had set before for the other hash run with slight changes, the paper led north across the Taman Bertam Setia housing estate into a matured oil palm plantation, an orchard and another oil palm plantation for some 30 minutes before setting the first simple check at a T-junction. Its connecting paper was placed some 100 metres ahead on the left.

The paper continued to lead forward through the undulating terrains in the oil palm plantation, upslope across a deep ditch to the top of an open hill where we could see the surrounding beautiful scenery and downhill for a short distance some 50 minutes later before setting the second simple check at another T-junction. Its connecting paper was placed on a bushy path some 50 metres away on the right after removing the old paper trail of a recent run which led forward downhill

The paper then continued to cross a ditch downhill into a bushy path, uphill across a bushy rubber plantation and downhill into another oil palm plantation where it zigzagged left, right and centre for another some 1 hour and 10 minutes before crossing a worn-out wooden bridge for a short distance where the third and last simple check was placed at a cross junction. Its connecting paper was placed some 50 metres ahead beside an oil palm tree which led to the home trail. For the purpose of avoiding confusion, some old papers of a previous run on the left of the junction were picked up which made its trail disconnected.

From then on, it was another some 20-minutes tracking southward through the oil palm plantation and the in-trail before arriving back at the run site at 4.10 pm where there was still no sight of any early bird. We then left to our respective homes for bath and short rest.

It was a medium run of some 8 km across 2 moderate hills which took us some 2 hours and 55 minutes to set. A few parts of its trail overlapped the recent running trail of other hashing chapter. In order to avoid its confusion, more new papers were placed on the old trail and the old papers were picked up from the surroundings of second and third simple checks.

On our arrival back to the run site from homes at 6.35 pm, we met scheduled runners Speedy Gonzales and Kacang Panjang who had completed their run after starting it at 6.00 pm. From their description of the running trail, we gathered that they had followed the wrong trail back from the second check which is shorter. This also applied to a few other runners. Among them was Camel Lok who exited from the nearby Taman Bertam Impian housing estate at 7.30 pm when he was picked up by Hawaii Goh with his vehicle.

The first on-trail runner was back at 7.05 pm. He was none other than energetic Dr. Pandyarajah. He was followed by Govind, Gopal, 4896, Super 96 and Ranger who followed the wrong trail. The last runners who exited at 8.15 pm when the sky was pitch dark when we were about to conduct a search were veteran hashers Pecker, Holy and Helen of Troy. In spite of their late exit after following the wrong trail, they were seen smiling broadly. Only God knows why! This reminded me of an incident in the mid 1990s when veteran hasher Uncle Fun was lost at the run site of Gangsa with 2 harriets and only exited the next morning with smiling face after an intensive search by both fellow hashers and police had failed to find them. Understandably, most harriers like GM Dennis the Menace, Ex GM Cocker, Ex GM Vibrator and Ex GM Bombastic will agree with me that we would not mind getting lost and spending the night in the jungle with harriets like Baby Elephant and Chickadee. Ha..ha..ha!

In the absence of GM Dennis the Menace, hash circle was conducted by Ex GM Cocker. Besides making a few hashing announcements, it saw a number of sinners being put on ice and on-downed.

On On was held at the nearby Soon Feng Restaurant in Cheng. In attendance were some 36 hungry hashers who were feted with a 6-course delicious Chinese dinner which was partly subsidized by the hare. Another on-downed session was held for a good number of sinners before we called it a night at around 10.30 pm. Thanks hare for the good run and dinner.

See you at the coming Deepavali Run of Indian Connection at Hang Jebat Stadium!

On! On!
